Lessons from Eating a Banana

Picture this.

You’re at a hotel restaurant teaming with people. The smell of freshly cooked waffles wafting in from the open buffet.

You glance to your left and see a child, no older than 5 inspecting a banana.

Usually, you’d move on. But the way they were eyeing the banana seemed suspect.

You’re waiting for them to peel the banana but they don’t. they pick it up and take a massive bite out the centre of it - skin and all.

Now let me ask you - is this child stupid?

It seems pretty obvious to 9,999/10,000 people you don’t eat the skin of a banana so it must be considered stupid.

What if they had never seen a banana in their life and no-one told them you need to peel it first?

A lot of other fruits you eat with skin on you know…

Apples

Pears

Grapes (skinless grape would be wild)

So maybe it’s not stupid after all.

How is this relevant to your marketing?

Well - there are many things I see companies doing that on the face of it are like eating the skin of a banana.

I may even coin the phrase “Skin-On Banana Marketing” to describe the insane things I see people doing.

But I can’t expect everyone to know what we know. Most people are out there doing their very best trying to grow their business but they haven't spent 7 years making every mistake under the sun to learn the lessons from failure.

Maybe they see that a boosted post on Instagram that was their most liked piece of content to date was a good idea without understanding the fundamentals of why this is a terrible idea.

***Disclaimer - don’t EVER pay to boost a piece of content***

You don’t know what you don’t know.

But (probably) we do - so let’s have a no-strings-attached chat, and answer some of those burning questions.
